Target 0
How to play
Goal
Reach the target number exactly by combining the six numbers you're given.
How it works
- Tap a number, then a sign (+ − × ÷), then a second number. The two are replaced by the answer.
- Each number can be used once. You don't have to use them all.
- Only whole numbers above zero are allowed at every step, so no fractions and no negatives. A division must come out exactly.
- You win as soon as the target appears. Undo takes back a step. “Show me” reveals one way to do it.
- Gentle targets are under 200. Classic targets run from 101 to 999, as on television.
- Every target can be reached.
Tips
- Get close with a big multiplication first, then fix the difference with small numbers. For 412, try 4 × 100 = 400, then add 12.
- The big numbers (25, 50, 75, 100) are good for building hundreds. 75 and 25 can also make 3 (75 ÷ 25).
- Work backwards: is the target a multiple of one of your numbers? Then find the other factor.
The history of Target Number
This is the numbers round from the French TV game Des chiffres et des lettres, first broadcast in 1965, where it is called Le compte est bon (“the count is right”). The format was later adapted for television in many countries.
