Goal
Work out the rule behind a row of numbers, and pick the number that comes next. See how many you can get right in a row.
How it works
- Five numbers follow a rule. Look at how each one changes into the next.
- Tap the number you think comes next. A right answer adds to your streak, and the game tells you the rule.
- One wrong answer ends the run and shows the rule you missed.
- Easy uses adding, taking away and counting in steps. Tricky adds doubling, squares and rules that grow.
Tips
- First check the gaps between neighbours: are they the same, or do they grow?
- If the numbers grow very fast, try multiplying or doubling.
- If the gaps change, look at the gaps of the gaps.
The history of Next in Line
Number patterns are as old as counting. The famous sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 (each number is the sum of the two before it) was described by Indian mathematicians centuries before the Italian Leonardo of Pisa, called Fibonacci, wrote about it in his book of 1202. Spotting the rule in a row of numbers is a classic test of reasoning, used in puzzles and school exams around the world.
