How to play
Goal
Clear the board by removing matching tiles in pairs.
How it works
- Tap two identical tiles to remove them. Only free tiles can be picked.
- A tile is free when no tile lies on top of it, and its left or right side is open (no tile right next to it on that side, on the same layer).
- Blocked tiles look slightly dimmer.
- Hint shows a free pair. Undo takes back your last pair. If no free pair is left, the tiles are reshuffled for you so you can keep going.
- Every deal can be cleared.
The tiles
Numbers 一 to 九 (one to nine), the winds 東 南 西 北 (east, south, west, north), the dragons 中 發 白, the seasons 春 夏 秋 冬, and the flowers 梅 蘭 竹 菊 (plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum).
Tips
- Work from the top down and from the ends inwards: tiles on top and at the ends of long rows block the most.
- When several pairs are free, pick the one that frees the most new tiles.
- If all four tiles of a kind are free at once, you can clear them in any order.
The history of Mahjong Solitaire
The tiles come from mahjong, a four-player game from China in the 1800s. The one-player matching game was created in the United States in 1981 by Brodie Lockard, and is now one of the world's most popular solitaire games.
