How to play
Goal
Move all 52 cards onto the four foundation piles at the top right, one pile per suit, from Ace up to King.
The layout
- Tableau: seven columns below. Only the bottom card of each is face up at the start.
- Stock: the face-down pile at the top left. Tap it to turn cards onto the waste pile beside it.
- Foundations: four spaces at the top right, built up by suit from Ace to King.
How it works
- In the columns, build downwards in alternating colours: a red 7 on a black 8, then a black 6 on that, and so on.
- Tap a card to move it. It goes to a foundation if it can, otherwise to the best column. Tapping a card in the middle of a column moves it together with the cards on top of it.
- Only a King (or a run starting with a King) can move into an empty column.
- When a face-down card is uncovered, it turns over by itself.
- When the stock runs out, tap its space to turn the waste pile back over. You can go through it as often as you like.
- Draw 1 turns one card at a time and is easier. Draw 3 turns three, and only the top one can be played.
- When every card is face up, a Finish button sends the rest home for you. Undo works at any time.
Tips
- Uncover face-down cards whenever you can, starting with the longest columns.
- Don't rush cards to the foundations: a low card in a column can be a useful place to build.
- Only empty a column if you have a King ready to move into it.
The history of Klondike
Klondike is thought to be named after the Klondike Gold Rush in Canada in the 1890s, where prospectors are said to have played it. It became the world's best-known patience game when it came free with home computers in the 1990s.
