How to play
Goal
A colour name appears in coloured ink. Tap the colour of the ink, not the word. Try to get all ten right.
How it works
- You will see a word such as Blue, but it may be written in red ink. The right answer is then Red.
- Tap the button that matches the ink. A game is ten rounds.
- There is no clock, so take your time. Your score is how many you got right.
- Choose 3 colours to start, or 4 for a bigger challenge.
Tips
- Your eyes will want to read the word. That pull is normal, and it is what the game trains you to resist.
- Try to ignore what the letters say and just look at the colour, as if the word were a blob.
- Slow, steady answers beat rushed ones.
The history of Colour Word
In 1935 the American psychologist John Ridley Stroop showed that people name the ink colour of a word more slowly when the word spells a different colour. The effect is named after him and is still one of the most studied results in psychology: it shows how reading is so automatic that it gets in the way. Researchers use versions of it to study attention and self-control.
