How to play
Goal
Slide and merge numbered tiles to build a tile worth 2048.
How it works
- Swipe up, down, left or right on the board (or use the arrow keys). Every tile slides as far as it can in that direction.
- When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one with double the value: 2 + 2 makes 4, 4 + 4 makes 8, and so on.
- After every move, a new 2 (or sometimes a 4) appears in an empty square.
- Each merge adds the new tile's value to your score.
- The game ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything. Undo takes back your last move.
- Reaching 2048 wins, and you can keep going for a higher score.
Tips
- Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile there. Many players use the bottom-left.
- Mostly use two directions (for example left and down), a third when needed, and the fourth only when forced.
- Build a chain of falling values along one edge, such as 256, 128, 64, 32, so each merge flows into the next.
- Don't chase small merges in the middle of the board. Keep it tidy.
The history of 2048
Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli, then 19, made 2048 over a weekend in March 2014 and released it for free. It was based on earlier games called 1024 and Threes, and was played by millions within weeks.
